Sustainability and Environment

Durdle Door Holiday Park - Your Piece of Paradise

Our Sustainability Statement

Here at Durdle Door Holiday Park, we take environmental sustainability seriously.

Our commitment to reducing waste and promoting reusable materials extends across Durdle Door Holiday Park, with reducing our impact on the environment at the forefront of everything we do.

Our Reception

  • A paperless booking system ensures minimal paper waste, alongside fitting our Reception building with energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Maps clearly display bin bays where waste can be separated into general waste, mixed recycling, and glass.
  • We encourage our guests and owners to be mindful of their energy usage and the best ways to minimise energy waste whilst enjoying their time at Durdle Door.

Around the Holiday Park

  • In April 2024 we were awarded the Level 5 Sustainable Business Award for our continuous efforts as a business, to reduce our impact on the environment.
  • We have a new Nature area on the park, introduced in March 2024! The woodland area in Hardy has been completely cleared making way for several habitats for various species to enjoy, including bat boxes, bug hotels and owl houses. There has been a huge increase in the siting of wildlife settling into this area, including a pair of Tawny Owls!
  • We continue to phase out our existing vehicles with electric: we have replaced two vehicles for our housekeeping team, three for our maintenance team, and have an electric buggy for use on Park.
  • We have installed a water butt under the guttering of our shower block to collect and reuse rain water.
  • We strictly follow the guidance from Natural England in regards to hedge trimming and landscaping, ensuring our local conservation areas remain a haven for the flora and fauna that live among us.
  • We use local suppliers and products where possible.
  • We are a Jurassic Coast Trust Business Partner, which means we help to protect the UK’s only natural Heritage Site. We actively support its management and conservation by raising funds through visitor giving.
  • We achieved a Silver Award for The David Bellamy Conservation Award for 2018/19 which is the longest running green tourism award in the UK.  The parks that take part in the scheme are all regularly assessed by the scheme’s team of local wildlife experts. The assessors look at the steps parks are taking to:
    • Manage their land as a haven for wildlife
    • Reduce their use of energy, water and other resources
    • Reduce, reuse and recycle the waste they produce
    • Support their local communities

Our Suppliers

  • We source our linen from Star Linen, which in April 2024 became a Certified B Corporation business. This certification is a testament to their unwavering commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices and we’re very proud to support them!
  • Within housekeeping we have changed the cleaning products we use to P&G Professional, which are better for the environment and our teams health, but has also allowed us to hugely reduce our single use plastic.
  • In 2023 our laundry department also moved across to P&G Professional, within the first year we have seen a huge reduction in our utility bills as we wash at a lower temperatures and on shorter cycles.
  • We source the majority of our products from Lyreco, whether it be for housekeeping or office stationary supplies, as they are committed to making a difference. From achieving their zero waste to landfill target and introducing electric vehicles, right through to ensuring ethics and compliance in all countries they operate.

Holiday Home Decking – Our Suppliers

We work with Vinyl Solutions and The Mayfield Group to fit well made yet sustainable decks to our Holiday Homes.

  • Vinyl Solutions uPVC products are fully recyclable materials, and as a business they collect and process surplus uPVC materials for regrinding and re-use in various new products
  • The Mayfield Group use plastics that are made of up to 80% recycled materials during their manufacturing process. They use FSC timber to form the substructures of their decks – a sustainable material sourced from well-managed forests.

Children’s Play Area

  • Our Woodland Adventure children’s play area is created among our wooded area out of reclaimed materials and will be fully recyclable at the end of its life.
  • We introduced a ‘Pollinator Patch’ flower bed in our Adventure Playground as a haven for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, helping to promote their reproduction.

Refuse and Recycling

  • We encourage all visitors and owners to use our many refuse and recycling bins across the Holiday Park. We also encourage through signage for beach visitors to take their rubbish home.
  • We do not permit disposable BBQs on the Holiday Park due to the devastating impact they can have on our rural surroundings.
  • Fires and BBQs are not permitted on Durdle Door or Man O’ War beaches.

Looking to the future…

  • More and more, people are looking at what they can do to reduce our impact on the environment, which is fantastic. We too have big plans!
  • We will continue to replace our vehicles with electric vehicles at the end of their life.
  • We will continue to promote a reduction in energy wastage among our guests and owners to further reduce our environmental impact.
  • We will be planting lavender in the planters outside the Man O’ War Bar & Restaurant, which will then be used as centre pieces on dining table displays.
