Our Road Trip Guide To The Jurassic Coast

Best road trips along the Jurassic Coast

Dorset as a county doesn’t have any motorways. This makes it PERFECT road trip country! Surrounded by coast, there are incredible vistas to be seen from every lay-by. Whether you’ve got a day or a week, are travelling by motorhome or car, make Durdle Door the focal point of your trip with a touring or camping pitch.

  1. Durdle Door To Sandbanks

Journey time Durdle Door to Door: 30-40mins

From Durdle Door head towards the market town of Wareham. The Saxon-walled town is a great stop-off for road trip snacks and coffee. There are fantastic independent coffee shops, cafes and bakeries, and even a zero waste store too.

Refuelled, follow signs towards Corfe Castle. The striking silhouette of the hill-top ruin can be seen for miles around, and is even better experienced up close. Turn off under the steam train track for a gloriously twisty country road to Studland. Enjoy the legendary ice-cream truck at the viewpoint, with views all the way to Poole Harbour and beyond. Wild and ragged white sand beaches line the road here, all the way to the peninsula and chain ferry to Sandbanks, the town that millionaires call home. You can also see Brownsea Island here.

  1. Durdle Door to Portland

Journey time Durdle Door to Door: 40-50mins

On the way, you’ll pass by the Osmington White Horse, a chalk carving in the hillside of King George on his noble steed. Witness incredible sea views on your journey. Be sure to spend time in Weymouth, its vintage seaside charm including Punch & Judy and beach side fairground invite you to while away hours on the parade. Hop over Chesil Beach to the peninsula of Portland for Instagram-worthy views of Portland Bill, the lighthouse.
